INTRODUCTION TO YOGA
Purpose:
To increase our awareness of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies (sheaths) in order to maximize our potential.
Benefit:
To find the source of life force (prana) energy within ourselves so that we may heal our body-minds, open our hearts and free our souls.
Principles:
· Breath – to find the state of quiet attention by following the release of the exhalation and the expansion of the inhalation
· Ground – to establish a secure and stable foundation for the bodymind to release & to function at an optimal level.
· Spine – to lengthen the spine, using the breath, to bring energy and vitality to our bodies.
Philosophy:
Each of us is exactly where we need to be for the period of time that we are there. “Wherever you go, there you are”. Jon Kabat-Zinn.
Guidelines:
· Stretch to feel good, avoid strain – any pain, no gain.
· Own your own yoga – come out of a pose when you are ready. You can go back in whenever you choose. Do whatever pose you feel like doing – you don’t need to “follow the program”!
· Move on an exhale and rest on an inhale (primary breathing pattern).
· Ask questions anytime - during asanas (poses) or pranayama (breathing).
· Enjoy – have fun – spontaneity leads to creativity and creativity offers fulfillment. Laughter allows us to release whatever we need to let go of.
